Background
Mauritius is a mountainous island in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. Mauritius is of volcanic origin and generally sheltered by barriers of coral reefs forming natural, safe, crystal clear lagoons, making it a dream destination. It is therefore promoted in holiday brochures as one of those faraway places associated with the dodo and desert island dreams.

Since independence, Mauritius has developed from a low income, agriculturally based economy (sugar producing island) to a middle income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial and tourist sectors.

For most of the period annual growth for the 1.2 million inhabitants has been in the order of 5 to 6%. This remarkable achievement has seen Mauritius attract more than 9,000 offshore entities, and has a GDP percapita income of $13 100. The currency is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs.)
